Local Information

Westray is known locally as the Queen o’ the Isles.  It has lots to offer and is well worth a visit.

Chalmersquoy is a great base to explore Westray.  Situated on the edge of Pierowall Village it is just a short walk away from all the local amenities.

Other local attractions are not far away.  The beaches and coastline are well worth a wander not forgetting Noup Head cliffs and bird reserve, Noltland Castle and the Castle o’Burian where puffins are in plentiful supply during the season.

Round off your afternoon with a coffee at the new village cafe and you will be relaxed and in full holiday mode in no time.

For more tourist information about Westray visit the Westray & Papa Westray Tourist Association website.

Pierowall Village

In the village you will find two amazingly well stocked shops (selling fresh local bread), a hotel which offers good homemade food, a heritage centre, a fantastic fish merchant (with the added bonus of fish and chips on Wednesdays and Saturdays), a swimming pool, a fitness centre, a café, children’s play park and local craft shops.

W.I. Rendall (Merchant) also sells petrol and diesel.

J.C. Tulloch (Merchant) is also the post office.

Westray Golf Course is within walking distance and has been newly renovated.

A bus can take you from the ferry to Chalmersquoy.  The service runs all year round from the ferry terminal, but during the winter you need to book ahead.  To book please call Kenneth Harcus on 07789 034289.

There is a local taxi service run by Graham Maben.  Graham also runs Westraak Tours.  You can arrange a taxi or tour with him on 07766 073088.

Westray boasts one of Europe’s largest bird colonies at Noup Head.  There are terns, fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemots and puffins nesting from mid April to early August.  It is an amazing site to watch the puffins at sunset at the Castle o’ Burrian.

There are many seals around the island including right in front of Chalmersquoy.

Wild flowers are plentiful and Westray is one of a very few places you can find the Primula Scotica.
